Authors Argument:
Carlson is trying to tell people that everyone is "normal". Also he is making it clear that teachers should use words such as "Homosexual, Bi-sexual, etc" in there classroom because no doing so just shows people that being homosexual for example is different than being normal.
Quotes:
1) "..while other individuals and subject positions (i.e. black, working class, female, homosexual, etc.) are disempowered and represented as deviant, sick, neurotic, criminal, lazy, lacking in intelligence, and in other ways "abnormal".
When i read this quote, i looked back and said to myself "was that really just said?". Do people really think that people who are black, working class, homosexual, etc. are lazy and lacking in intelligence? I know that there are people in this world that are "racist" or judgemental to others but i didnt really expect to read that people thought this way about others. Shouldnt they have been taught that people are not "abnormal" just because they are different than others doesnt mean that they are not normal!
2) "These abuses get tolerated because gay teachers and students operate in an environment where they feel afraid to stand up for themselvs, and because any discussion of gay people continues to be absent in the curriculum so that homophobia is not interrogated."
It upsets me that people just tolerate the horrible behaviors that others do to people who are gay. People should not have to be scared of going to work or school because their afraid that people may bully them. I think that if homosexuality was brought up in schools there wouldnt be as much bullying to people.
3) "It is now estimated that up to one-third of all adolescent suicide victims are gay, approximately one-quarter of all homeless youth in the United States are gay, and dropout and drug abuse rates among gay youth are likewise high."
When i read this it made me feel really upset. The statistic about 1/3 of adolescent suicide victims are gay is just horrible! If people would just recognize homosexuality things like this would not happen! People dont realize that the things they say or do to people have such an impact on them!

I thought this article was very interesting to read. It is amazing that schools will not talk about homosexuality because there afraid of "what may happen". People are not abnormal, there just who they are. Is there such a thing as being abnormal? This made me think about alot of things.

It upset me to read that schools were trying to subdue their students and teacher's individuality. Everyone should be free to be who they are.
